Hundreds of thousands of pairs cost only 6 yuan a pair

The Cambodian Garment Manufacturers’ Association (GMAC), the Cambodian Footwear Association (CFA) and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (EuroCham) have recently signed a joint letter to the European Commission requesting that the European Commission extend its EBA privileges for 12 months.

According to the Cambodian Garment Manufacturers’ Association, the Cambodian Footwear Association and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, the COVID-19 outbreak has disrupted production and reduced global demand, causing severe losses to the Garment, shoe and travel goods manufacturing industries in Cambodia.

Production at Cambodia’s 250 garment, shoe and travel goods businesses has been halted and more than 130,000 workers, mostly women, have lost their jobs.
In the first quarter of this year, many customers in Cambodia canceled orders for clothing, footwear and travel supplies. Therefore, the sales volume of the above products will drop by 50%-60% year on year this year.

Van Sou Ieng, chairman of the Cambodian garment manufacturers’ Association, said the industry would be “worse off” if the EU insisted on revoking some of the EBA’s preferential treatment on August 12.

Arnaud Darc, President of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, said the COVID-19 outbreak has a serious impact on the global economy, including Cambodia. The EU is Cambodia’s largest trading partner, accounting for 45 percent of the country’s total merchandise exports to the EU in 2018, worth $5.5 billion.
